Summary Description

First mention of the name of the town was in 1295 following the granting of a charter in 1279 before which is was known as Llanfair-yng-Nghedewain. The town developed in the 1830 as a centre of wool weaving. Note The Textile Museum nearby the church. Price Jones developed his Royal Welsh warehouse in 1859 beginning the revolution of mail order. In 1966 it became the Development Board for Rural Wales chief centre of expansion so doubling the population by the end of C20. Reference The Encyclopaedia of Wales
