Summary Description

Bala, established by Rober Mortimer in c1310, it was the last of the Welsh medieval boroughs to be created. The town grew to be a centre of woollen stocking manufacture during C18 when about 200,000 pairs were made annually. The town is now a centre for water sports. The name comes form the ‘outflow of the lake’. There is similar named town in Turkey named by the Celtic speaking Galatians. Reference The Encyclopaedia of Wales
