Summary Description

Once known as Abermawddach the town was just a creek in 1565 but improved after 1797 when an act to improve the harbour was obtained, to become the principle harbour for the export of woollen cloth from Dolgellau and Bala. Ship building along the side of the estuary was also popular until the coming of the Cambrian Coast Railway References Buildings of Wales – Gwynedd 2009 The Welsh Academy Encyclopaedia of Wales
